Road trip!

C and I are going on a Mother-Daughter road trip this weekend!

We're driving to Nova Scotia to visit my best friend before her Mom moves back to Calgary (she's visiting her this week). It's a 5 hour drive plus lunch and playtime, so I'll admit I'm a bit worried, but hoping for the best. We did a 4 hour trip a few months ago, and that went relatively well, so here's hoping! Pray that she naps for part of the drive!

I've made CDs of music and stories, and I'll bring the DVD player and some shows for C to watch. Toys and snacks are a must, although there's only so much she can reach while she's strapped in her car seat. I'm going to try to attach a soft basket next to her seat to hold some of her things since she can't reach the seat pocket in front of her.

I find airplane travel much easier from an entertainment perspective. At least on a plane we can read stories together, draw pictures, play with toys that need a surface to play on... But at least in the car we have control over the music, and we don't have any cranky seatmates!

Any car travel tips you want to share?

oooh! fun! We are heading out in a couple of weeks to the beach - looking at a 4-5 hour drive, so I've been thinking of travel entertainment too! I found a craft case at Joann's. It's big enough to hold 12x12 scrapbook paper, and looks like a little suit case with a handle. I have filled it with stickers, plain paper, coloring/activity books, mini puzzles, crayons, etc. I am going to add playdoh to it before we leave town.

I figure it will be great for the car and for the beach house!

Check out Snail Mom's post on what she takes along! www.thesnailstrail.blogspot.com

I need to post what all is going to go in our travel boxes!

Let us know how it goes! We are planning to fly across the country sooner or later to visit family :)

Not that I've done much car traveling with my 1 year old, but when we do travel, I ration the toys. I give him one, and then when he's bored pull out a new one. And snacks help too.

Have a safe and fun trip!

Wow, you are brave to try such a long trip wth a 2yo! You've already mentioned most of my tricks; non-chokable snacks in those no-spill cups help a lot (yogurt melts and cheerios). I've also had a lot of success wrapping a toy (even one the kids already owned) and handing them that to open as a surprise.

Hope you have a great trip!

I'm also traveling this weekend with an 8 month old, 4 hours in the car. What I've learned is give yourself lots of travel time because it helps to take plenty of breaks! And bring good kids music! Also, try to travel during nap times.

Thanks for all your suggestions, gals, I really appreciate it! I had a bag packed with things for our car trip, and it went so well I didn't even need to use everything!
